Hemorrhoids are dilated veins inside the anus. They can cause discomfort when defecating.

The best way to prevent hemorrhoids is to intervene directly with their causes and thus reduce their risk.

What causes hemorrhoids?

In general, they can be caused by many things, such as:

  • Very low fiber diet
  • Constipation
  • Effort when defecating
  • Pregnancy and childbirth

How to prevent hemorrhoids?

1. Drink 2 liters of water a day

Adequate water intake helps prevent constipation

Good eating habits should be supplemented with adequate water intake. It is recommended to drink 1.5-2 liters of it every day as this is the best amount to stimulate the gut. This way, defecation does not require hard effort, but goes smoothly.

Drinking plenty of water relieves constipation. In addition, it softens the stool, thus eliminating all the causes of hemorrhoids.

2. Stay on a high-fiber diet

A balanced and high-fiber diet reduces effort with a toilet bowl. This way, the veins in the anus do not appear and the inflammation does not progress to more severe pain and bleeding.

Inflammatory damage can sometimes make defecation more difficult and thus cause more problems.

Eat the right amount of fiber. It is available e.g. the following dishes:

  1. Legumes
  2. Fruit
  3. Cereals
  4. Vegetables
  5. Whole grain products

3. Exercise

Exercise helps prevent hemorrhoids

Regular exercise helps not only to lose weight and increase physical endurance, but also to improve the passage of waste through the intestines. When the bowel works well continuously, the stool stays softer throughout the journey. This makes defecation effortless, which  reduces the risk of hemorrhoids.

It is recommended to exercise at least 3 times a week. This may include forms of exercise that promote bowel mobility, such as walking, running, and swimming.

4. Avoid certain foods

People prone to hemorrhoids should try to avoid certain foods that are not recommended for this affliction. These include:

  • Spicy foods
  • Mustard
  • Spices
  • Garlic
  • Vinegar
  • Coffee
  • Salty foods

All of these foods make it difficult for feces to pass through the gut, causing damage along the way.

Salty foods can cause more blood clots in the arteries, which exacerbates hemorrhoids. It is therefore advisable to enjoy them in moderation.

5. Always go to the bathroom when needed

Stool retention is a bad habit, especially if you have previously suffered from hemorrhoids. It is best to go to the bathroom as soon as the need arises. The gut can always be “trained” to empty at certain times, so there is no need to wait for hours to get to the toilet when an emergency occurs.

Retention has consequences, such as an increase in pressure in the anal area. This causes the veins to bulge and thus hemorrhoids.

It is recommended to always defecate at the same times so that it becomes a routine physiological habit at certain times.

Most importantly, don’t hold back under any circumstances, and don’t be afraid to go to the bathroom outside of your home as well.

The anal area is also part of the body and needs care so that it does not cause any discomfort.
