Inflammation of the tongue tongue is an inflammation of  a small elongated muscle, the tongue tongue. The cheek tab hangs from a soft mouth at the back of the mouth.

What is inflammation of the guitar tongue?

According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the  palate tab is a soft tissue flap that hangs from the back of the mouth (at the edge of the soft palate). Although this structure was previously believed to be only a useless remnant, it has since been found to have a clear function: it prevents food from entering the nasal cavity.

The medical website Medigraphic describes inflammation of the palate “acute cellulitis of the palate (inflammation of the connective tissue layer) that causes redness, swelling, pain, and fever”. It is noteworthy that while bacterial or viral infections are the most common triggers for ailment, they are by no means the only ones.

What causes it?

According to the U.S. National Library of  Medicine, inflammation of the guitar tongue is mainly due to streptococci, a group of bacteria pathogenic to humans. Up to 30% of acute pharyngitis, which is strongly associated with inflammation of the palate, is associated with Streptococcus pyogenes.

Other pathogenic infectious factors that may cause that clinical picture include Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and  Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus). Infectious inflammation of the guitar tongue is more common in young school-age children and is quite a seasonal disorder, especially in temperate areas. Susceptibility is at its peak at the age of five, ten and twelve years.

Infectious inflammation of the guitar tongue is not the only possible variation of that disease. The non-infectious type may be due to the following situations:

• Damage to the back of the throat
• Allergic reaction to pollen, dust, dead pet skin cells or certain foods
• Accidental inhalation or ingestion of certain toxic substances
• Surgery such as tonsillectomy and other treatments such as endoscopy
• Smoking

How does inflammation of the guitar tongue symptom?

The patient should suspect inflammation of the palate due to acute infection when the palate is the most swollen structure of the pharynx if the patient also develops a mild fever. Some common general symptoms include:

• Fever, as a product of infection
• Feeling of something extra in the throat, accompanied by a feeling of suffocation and coughing

• Cough
• Swallowing pain
• Excessive saliva production
• Weak appetite

The Colgate Professional website states that if the symptoms of inflammation of the palate do not disappear within a few days or white patches appear on the back of the mouth, the patient may suffer from pharyngitis caused by streptococcal bacteria. Although this is much more common in children, it can also occur in adults.

Diagnosis and treatment

The medical site Drugs.com states that there are numerous diagnostic tests to identify the underlying causes of inflammation of the palate. Here are some of them:

• Blood tests. These may be needed to assess the patient’s general health and to rule out certain situations.
• Throat cultivation. A sample taken from the oral mucosa is cultured in a special medium that can be used to identify any bacteria that cause inflammation of the palate, if it is of infectious origin.

• Allergy tests. Swelling of the palate tongue can also be caused by an allergy. It is important to identify the allergen, as this will help avoid that clinical picture in the future and also other, much more serious conditions such as anaphylactic shock.
• Neck x-rays. Especially for patients who have difficulty swallowing.

Treatment, in turn, depends on the underlying cause. If a patient has bacterial inflammation of the laryngeal tongue, the doctor will prescribe certain antibiotics to kill the pathogen. In contrast, if the ailment is allergic, the patient needs antihistamines. Steroids can also relieve swelling.

Domiciliary care

According to the UF Health website, a patient can take several measures at home to relieve symptoms. Here are few:

• Rest abundantly. Inflammation of the kit tongue can heal on its own or with treatment in one or two days.
• Drink plenty of fluids and gargle with warm salt water to reduce swelling.
• Use sprays to relieve throat itching.
• Take over-the-counter painkillers. They reduce the pain caused by swelling of the palate tongue.
• Do not smoke, and also avoid passive exposure to tobacco smoke, as this can cause throat irritation.

As you can see, inflammation of the guitar tongue is a sign of some ailment beneath, and it is not a disease in itself. The causes of inflammation of the tongue tongue can be very diverse and range from infections to allergies.

Usually the ailment disappears with good care in one or two days. Treatment depends solely on the underlying cause, as bacterial infections are not treated in the same way as allergic inflammation.
